Two people died in a trench collapse Wednesday morning near New Plymouth, according to the Payette County Sheriff's Office.

Payette County identified the two as 59-year-old Javier Ortega Jr. of New Plymouth and 51-year-old Arcenio Carrillo of Vale

Deputies say the incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. between Akron and Butte Road on SW 1st Street outside of New Plymouth. Numerous first responders are on scene, including the Payette County Sheriff's Office, Idaho State Police and and an air ambulance. A private construction company also assisted emergency crews.

The sheriff's office says they were able to extricate the two men from the trench, but were unable to resuscitate them.

Deputies say the men were working for a private company installing irrigation pipes when the trench collapsed.

The Payette County Coroner is also investigating.

The Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, commonly known as OSHA, confirmed to CBS 2 News that it's investigating the incident.
